Winter is here and the holidays are looming. Maybe this brings the spirit of love and joy into your heart, maybe there’s a sprinkle of grief or anxiety present, too.

The holidays can kick up some unwanted feelings of sadness and dread. Seeing family and returning to “old times” may be difficult. Loss and change has its way of making itself glaringly obvious, too.

For others, this time of year could spark deep gratitude, love, and happiness.

No matter what combination of emotions you’re holding, know that it’s okay. It’s normal, even, as we complex humans can feel more than one conflicting emotion at the same time.

If this is a challenging time for you, I invite you to remember what is most important. Bring your values forth. Let them guide you through this hardship. Fall was a time for pruning and cleaning, be it mentally, emotionally, physically, or energetically. In this season of winter, keep what is most meaningful close to you. Allow what’s working to continue supporting you through the dark and cold months. Let the warmth of your dearest values, rituals, and loved ones surround you.

If this is a joyous time for you, I invite you to marvel in it. Savor the traditions and laughter shared with others. Bask in the spirit that surrounds you. Live by the joy and love you feel in your heart. Let it guide you to what’s most important. Be a source of light for those around you. Allow others to soak up your warmth during these dark and cold months.

No matter how you’re experiencing the holidays, please know I am sending you peace. This cross stitch hangs in my home only a couple of months out of the year. It’s my favorite decoration. I do my best to keep the notion with me year round. Now, I offer it to you:

Keep close to what matters most this holiday season.

With love (and a little Christmas spirit),
Mary Kate
